Chapter 13

The next morning he called her cell phone at just before six when he was getting ready to leave. “Sorry to wake you, Kelly, but I’m just thinking. I brought your motorcycle back, but you can’t drive it and you can’t do much with your hand. I know you don’t like TV all that much and there are only a couple of books and movies. Are you going to go crazy here without something to do?

“Do you want to come into Charlotte with me and you can have my car for the day? You could drive an automatic one handed, couldn’t you? You could sight see or shop. I just don’t want you to feel stranded and at a loose end.”

She was so asleep she hoped she understood what he was asking. “You must know me well. I’m going to be climbing the walls. But today I think I’m still going to be a zombie on pain pills. I wouldn’t dare drive. Could I take you up on that when I’m not so sore? Are you going to be coming here any of these next few days?”

“I can come any night. I’ll call you tonight and see how you feel. In the mean time, don’t do anything too dangerous, okay?”

“I won’t. I promise. Thank you for asking. Have a good day.”

“You too. See ya.” She hung up and laid there thinking about him. He was such a sweetie. She wished they could be more than just friends sometimes.

The kitties’ eyes had opened while she’d been in at his condo, and they were getting more and more alert and wiggly. They were not only adorable, they were also a lifesaver as far as keeping her entertained while she was indisposed. She felt guilty about hanging out in Robby’s room with the kittens, so she moved them into the living room beside the fireplace and then held one of them for hours when she was so sleepy and lethargic.

When Robby called, she opted for one more day there at the house with the pain medicine. As she taped a bag around her hand so she could shower without getting the bandage wet, she was hoping by the next night she could be off the strong stuff completely.

When he showed up late that night, he looked like heck again, and she looked at him hard, but didn’t ask. He’d been so ready for her to say something about him playing football that day that she felt guilty. Instead of mentioning that he seemed hammered, she took him in to see the kitties. He was so enamored with them that she watched him instead of them while he played with them. He laid on the floor next to where she’d put them and let them crawl all over his hands and arms.

Within minutes he had fallen asleep there on the hardwood floor with them, and she went and gently woke him. “Come on, Robby. They are adorable, but you have another huge day tomorrow.
